A new study suggests that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) may be putting the drug Viagra on the market even further.

The study, conducted by researchers from Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard-affiliated Brigham nipple pain clinic, was published online in theNew England Journal of Medicine. It found that men who took Viagra had a two to three times more urge to breast-feed while their men had no symptoms. The same was found for women who took the pill, which the study also found was associated with an increased risk of breast cancer.

“This study raises some important questions, especially since it is the first to assess the effect of Viagra on breast cancer risk among women using it,” said lead author Dr. Amy B. Galson, M. D., a medical director of the Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Medicine, and director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

The research was conducted at two sites in Massachusetts and the FDA said it found no evidence that Viagra causes breast cancer.

Viagra, which is also sold under the brand name Levitra, is a popular treatment for impotence. It has been linked to nearly 1,300 cases of cancer, but it also is being investigated for breast cancer.

Dr. Galson is a professor of clinical and preventive medicine at the University of Vermont School of Medicine.

She and her team reviewed the data and found that there was no evidence that Viagra had a positive effect on breast cancer.

“The effect is not clinically significant, but we feel this is a significant and important finding,” said Dr. Galson, whose research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health. “The researchers are taking a new look at the impact that Viagra has on breast cancer risk.”

In addition to Viagra, a drug marketed as Revatio, the FDA has also studied the effect of Viagra on the breast cancer-fighting hormone receptor (HR) and has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.

“This is important because we know that women who take this treatment for breast cancer have a very high risk of developing this disease,” Galson said. “We also know that this drug has a weak effect on the cancer cells that are responsible for making cancer cells grow.”

A recent study published inJournal of the American Medical Associationreported that Viagra users had higher rates of breast cancer than other breast cancer-fighting drugs.

A review published infound that Viagra use was linked to a four to five times greater risk of breast cancer for women who took the drug.

“We know from other studies that Viagra is associated with breast cancer, so we are not surprised by that result,” Galson said.

A study published inThe Journal of the American Medical Associationin April in theNew England Journal of Medicinefound that Viagra users were less likely to develop a breast cancer diagnosis than men with no history of breast cancer.

The researchers concluded that Viagra users were also “very likely to have higher odds of being diagnosed with breast cancer and to have a lower likelihood of being diagnosed with a recurrence of the disease after taking Viagra.”

Viagra is also approved for use in men with an enlarged prostate. The FDA has not yet made any announcement about its use in women.

The FDA has not announced whether it will approve Viagra for use in women. However, the FDA has said that it may do so for the first time in about 20 years.

“We are still very early on in our research on the effect of Viagra on breast cancer in women,” said Dr. B. S. Koyanuma, a professor of medicine at the Harvard Medical School.

“Viagra has been on the market since 1998, but there was no evidence that it causes breast cancer, so we cannot predict whether or not it causes breast cancer. It’s important to look for possible benefits from taking Viagra to treat this issue,” said Koyanuma.
